Everything you see today as "solid earth" has moved, and all the solid rocks you see today were once in a different place.
About 200 million years ago, there were mountains perhaps as high
as the Himalayas (20-25,000 feet) in Northern Virginia. Perhaps five
miles of rock once covered the surface where the Metro trains run
today...
Rain and wind is constantly eroding the surface, wearing down the
mountains. Water dissolves minerals, converts solid rock into clay, and
moves grains of sand downstream to the Chesapeake Bay, Virginia Beach,
and (ultimately) the continental shelf
Today the rivers run in channels that are relatively recent. The
Potomac River did not cut through the Blue Ridge at Harpers Ferry until 5
million years ago.
